5th grade:
Unit Goals:
-Classify genres
-Discuss character development
-Summarize plot
-Analyze setting
-Apply comprehension strategies

On-going Goals:
-Demonstrate fluency (tone, inflection, cadence, etc.)
-Extends vocabulary
-Respond to literature
-Read a wide range of grade level material

6th grade:
Comprehension:
-Demonstrate developmentally appropriate Reading comprehension.
Vocabulary:
-Demonstrate developmentally appropriate vocabulary development.
Literary Analysis:
-Demonstrate developmentally appropriate literary analysis.
Speaking and Listening:
-Demonstrate developmentally appropriate speaking and listening skills.


7th grade:
Unit Goals:
-Identify the 6 elements of fiction
-Identify the elements of a plot line within a story
-Review styles of narration
-Review literary conflicts
-Introduce/review mood, foreshadowing, suspense and irony
-Review characteristics of different genres

On-going Goals:
-Vocabulary development
-Review/introduce literary devices
-Critiquing novels through personal response (personal/summer reading) and comparing to other texts, related
personal experiences, prior knowledge
-Read a wide range of grade level appropriate material with accuracy, fluency, and understanding

8th grade:
Unit Goals:
-Characterization (direct, indirect, and ways to learn about a character)
-Levels of comprehension (literal, inferential, and applied); critical thinking
-Reading with meaning and inflection, and demonstrating logical interpretation of characters
-Reinforce literary devices (symbolism, metaphor, irony, theme)
-Review literary conflicts, plot, elements of fiction

On-going Goals:
-Making cross-curricular connections between historical fiction and American Studies
-Vocabulary in context
-Critiquing novels through personal response (personal/summer reading) and comparing to other texts, related
personal experiences, prior knowledge
-Read a wide range of grade level appropriate material with accuracy, fluency, and understanding
