5th grade
Students will:

use grade appropriate spelling and vocabulary.
Conventions:
apply correct conventions within context of assignment.
Stuctures of Language:
Use varied sentence lenthgs, structure, and organization.
Writing Responses:
State and maintain a focus, using specific details and references when responding to text.
Types of Writing:
Write in narrative, informational, persuasive, and expository genres.


6th grade
Conventions:
Students will apply correct conventions in text.
Students will use proper mechanics of writing in text.
Students will apply correct grammatical usage in text.
Spelling/Vocabulary:
Students will effectively use grade-appropriate spelling and vocabulary.
Students will apply conventional spellings of high frequency words.
Structures of Language:
Students will apply various sentence lengths and structures in writing.
Students will properly organize ideas in writing.
Students will apply and use proper paragraph structure in writing.
Writing Responses:
Students will state and maintain a focus using specific details and references
when responding to text.
Types of Writing:
Students will write effectively in narrative, informational, persuasive, and
expository genres.




7th Grade
Conventions: Student will apply correct conventions within the context of individual assignments.

Vocabulary and Spelling: Student will effectively use grade-appropriate vocabulary and spelling.

Structures of Language: Student will use varied sentence lengths, structure, and organization.

Writing Responses: Student will state and maintain a focus using specific details and references when responding to text.

Types of Writing: Student will write effectively in Narrative, Informational, Persuasive, and Expressive genres.




8th grade

Demonstrate command of English conventions by applying rules of grammar, usage, and mechanics in independent writing

Narrative - Students create, organize and relate a story line/plot/series of events
Expressive (Poetry) - Students demonstrate awareness of purpose and use language effectively.

Expressive (Reflective Writing) - Students explore and share thoughts, observations, and impressions.
Informational Writing (Reports, Procedures and Persuasive Writing) - Students organize and convey ideas/concepts and information, and convey purpose, using elaboration strategies.
Writing Responses to Literary or Informational Text - Students show understanding of plot/ideas/concepts and make analytical judgments about text.
Structures of Language - Students apply and demonstrate understanding of the structures of sentences, paragraphs and text.
